I seek serenity and joy on my journey of self discovery through painting. In 2012, my focus was on painting with other artists, outside, "en plein air": I looked at waves and tropical greens in Maui with some of the best outdoor painters on island, and I followed the seasonal color changes of Northwest landscapes with the Gorge Tuesday paint-out group. I participated for the second year in the Pacific Northwest Plein Air Competition, this time with more confidence and greater serenity!
I love plein air, and it will always be a major source of inspiration. This year I am also doing more studio work. Studio work is about taking more time to break things apart, to really think about composition and color theory. Sometimes it's to cut loose from reality and just let things happen. And it is an opportunity to paint bigger with all the challenges that come with changes in scale.
In April 2013, I will participate with 29 other regional artists in Gorge Artists Open Studios and in the Columbia Arts "Moods of Spring" Show. Come visit me and see my work in my studio on April 12, 13, & 14. And visit the spring group show at Columbia Arts in Hood River.
In June, I am the curator for the Columbia Arts "Art-A-Day" show featuring the work of 6 artists of diverse media who have undertaken the challenge to to make art a day during 30 days. I am a participant in this show and I have chosen to focus on the tree: as a sculptural element that holds a landscape together, as a still life, as an abstract symbol. Art-a-Day is about the discipline of just starting and finishing a piece in less than a day, it is an opportunity to explore an idea in depth; it is a mandate to be spontaneous and let things happen.
And that is just the first half of my painting year 2013!
